improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
Treatable conditions:
— Upper eyelid surgery can remove excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness. Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or
disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision, can be treated by upper eyelid lift surgery.
— Lower eyelid surgery can remove excess skin, correct fatty bags, and elevate the distance between the lid margin and the
lid-cheek junction; it can tighten a lax lower eyelid.
Dr. Slywka, known for his gentle, healing touch, artistry and experience, will help you determine your goals and provide the evaluation and plan for the best, most natural-looking eylid surgery results.
Upper Eyelid
Sagging skin of the upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid, with removal of excess skin and modifying underlying fat pockets if necessary. There are sutures in the skin which are removed usually between three and five days. The resulting scar line from the surgery does soften and fade with time.
Lower Eyelid
The incision is made just below the lower lash line extending a short distance beyond the lateral eyelid. Depending on the extent of lower eyelids aging and anatomy, the surgery could be limited to skin excision only (pinch blepharoplasty), to a more involved freeing of the superficial orbicularis muscle from its attachments to underlying bony orbit, with transposition of herniating fat over this bony rim, and upward fixation of an orbicularis muscle flap to the lateral position of the bony orbit and a conservative removal of excess skin. A tightening of the outer ligamentous structures of the lower lid to this same lateral orbital rim (canthopexy) is routinely performed. There are sutures in the skin which are usually removed in three to five days. The resulting scar line from the surgery does soften and fade with time.
At your initial consultation your eyelids will be examined and evaluated for the recommended eyelid procedure. Prior to any surgery, an ophthalmic consultation is usually recommended; risks and potential complications will be discussed; and lab tests will be ordered as well as a possible clearance from your general physician.
Eyelid surgeries are performed in our private, in-office surgical suite, which is AAAASF accredited and has a private exit door. We provide the highest standard of safety, care and privacy.
Eyelid surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or with intravenous sedation. Anesthesia is provided by a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist), who is always present during and after surgery until the patient has been discharged.
Dr. Slywka and his staff will give specific instructions on how to care for the eyelids following surgery. Cold compresses are a great benefit to minimize bruising and swelling; instructions regarding the necessary medications will be given. You will be seen the next day, and frequent follow-up visits will be arranged. It may take several months for swelling to fully dissipate and up to 6 months for incision lines to mature. You must practice diligent sun protection until the healing process is complete. Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimizing photo-aging or sun damage. In addition, a healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.
