If protruding or disfgured ears bother you or your child, you may consider plastic surgery. Ear surgery, (also known as otoplasty), can improve the shape, position or proportion of the ear. Ear surgery creates a natural shape, while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benfits to appearance and self-esteem. The ear lobe itself may be subject to enlargement with advancing age, and this area of the ear can be reduced in size to become in better proportion to the rest of the ear. Incomplete or complete tears at the site of a piercing may be repaired and eventually re-pierced.
Dr. Slywka, known for his gentle, healing touch, artistry and experience, will help you determine your goals and provide the evaluation and plan for the best, most natural-looking results.
Correction of protruding ears uses surgical techniques to create or increase the antihelical fold (just inside the rim of the ear) and reduces or sets back the conchal cartilage (the largest and deepest concavity of the external ear). Incisions for otoplasty are generally made on the back surface of the ear. When incisions are necessary on the front of the ear, they are made within its folds to hide them. Internal, non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place. External stitches close the incision. Techniques are individualized, taking care not to distort other structures and to avoid an unnatural “pinned back” appearance.
Ear surgery is usually performed in our private, in-office surgical suite, which is AAAASF accredited and has a private exit door. We provide the highest standard of safety, care and privacy.
Ear surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Anesthesia is provided by a CRNA (certified registered nurse anesthetist), who is always present during and after surgery until the patient has been discharged.
Dr. Slywka and his staff will give specific instructions on how to care of your ears following surgery. Ear surgery offers almost immediate results in cases of protruding ears, visible when the dressings that support the new shape of the ear during initial phases of healing are removed. Children and teenagers are both good candidates for ear surgery and will feel more confident about themselves and gain a better sense of self-esteem.
